What is a powerflush and when does your central heating need one?
A powerflush removes sludge from your central heating to restore efficiency and can help avoid a new boiler. Here is how it works and when you need it.

A powerflush is a deep clean of your central heating system. Over time, rust, sludge and debris build up inside the pipework and radiators, which makes the system work harder, heat unevenly, and can shorten the life of your boiler.
A powerflush removes that build-up and restores efficiency, and in many cases it is a cheaper option than replacing the boiler. Here is how it works and when your system may need one.
What a powerflush does
A powerflush uses a specialist machine to push a cleaning solution and high-pressure water through the entire heating system. This breaks up and flushes out the sludge and rust from the radiators, pipes and boiler, leaving the system clean and free-flowing.
It is a professional job carried out by a heating engineer, and it is different from simply bleeding a radiator, which only removes trapped air.
Signs your system needs a powerflush
Watch for these signs:
- Radiators cold at the bottom but warm at the top.
- Black or dirty water when you bleed a radiator.
- A noisy boiler or noisy radiators (gurgling, banging).
- Slow heating or rooms that warm unevenly.
- Repeated boiler faults or a system that struggles to run efficiently.
If bleeding radiators does not fix a cold spot, the cause is often sludge, and a powerflush is the appropriate fix. Our guide to how to bleed a radiator explains the difference between air and sludge.
Powerflush vs a new boiler
If your heating system is performing poorly, it is worth asking whether a powerflush can restore it before committing to a new boiler. A flush is far cheaper than a replacement and can extend the life of the existing system.
The right call depends on the age and condition of your boiler. Our guide to how much does a new boiler cost helps you compare, and a Gas Safe engineer can advise on whether a flush or a replacement is the better investment.
